Quinceanera is essentially the process of
celebrating a girl's fifteenth birthday. It is a festival that marks the
metamorphosis from girl to woman. It is celebrated by the majority of people in
Latin America and even in other places by people of Latin American descent. Of
course, the method of celebration varies from one country to another, as they
have their own customs and religious rituals. The ritual is known by different
names in different countries such as baile de debutantes, fete des quinze ans,
festa de debutantes and more. The birthday girl or the quinceanera is required
to dress in an evening dress such as a ball gown, and adorned with exquisite
make-up and a tiara.
What kind of dress should a
quinceanera wear?
A quinceanera is a formal occasion, and the girl
is normally dressed to be the centre of attraction, just like in a wedding. The
type of dress worn by a quinceanera depends upon the family's budget (some of
the more elaborate gowns cost as much as a wedding dress), the girl’s body type
and height, and other factors.
What are the types of quinceanera dresses?
- Mermaid: This type of dress accentuates the body's curves. It follows the body from the shoulders to the upper thighs and then widens near the hem. The tail is often long and trails behind. This type is best for slim quinceaneras.
- Princess: This type of cut is the most traditional. The bodice is narrow and fits tightly, tapering to the waist to reduce any bulges in the abdomen. Below it is the skirt that extends until the floor, just like a ball gown. This is a type that flatters every body type.
- Dropped waist: Dropped waist dresses have a lowered waistline. This type of cut is best for tall girls, because when this type is worn by shorter girls, it gives the impression of short legs.
- Sheath: This type is also known as a column dress. It is a figure hugging cut and wraps the body from the top, all the way downwards till the hem where it becomes slightly roomier. Best for slim and athletic girls.
- Empire: Here the waistline is located underneath the bust-line, below which the gown becomes free flowing to the floor. This style is best for heavy, more developed girls, as it provides a lot of support. Moreover, it also helps to make the stomach section look flatter.
Indeed, dressing
young women may not be a difficult task but quenceanera is certainly a matter
of delicate choice.
